Evan F. Hiller began his career representing the State in multi-party litigation involving thirty witnesses and vast document discovery. He served as first-chair trial counsel for a state licensing board, successfully defending regulations against constitutional claims in a two-day bench trial. He also represented the State in defending a challenged statute at both trial and appellate levels, including oral arguments in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Mr. Hiller has experience in private practice, conducting intellectual property and technology litigation. He successfully defended a software company in a patent infringement lawsuit, defeating a motion for a preliminary injunction and leading to a favorable settlement. Additionally, he has acted as lead discovery attorney for a semiconductor manufacturer in a Section 337 Investigation before the International Trade Commission, overseeing the admission of evidence during a seven-day hearing.
At Sacks Tierney, Mr. Hiller has served as second-chair trial counsel for a Native American tribe in three separate water rights trials, spanning more than 100 trial days and involving the depositions and cross-examination of dozens of lay and expert witnesses. He has prevailed in a jury trial, successfully defending against defamation and malicious prosecution claims, and in a bench trial, securing a judgment of more than one million dollars (including attorneys’ fees) in a fraud action. He has also successfully defended two appeals before the Arizona Court of Appeals as lead appellate counsel.
Mr. Hiller is admitted to practice in Arizona and California before multiple U.S. District Courts and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. He holds a J.D. from Columbia University School of Law, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and Executive Editor of the Columbia Science & Technology Law Review, and a B.A. in English and Computer Science, cum laude from Williams College.
